Selected-country summary

🇺🇸 United States · 1990 → 2025

For United States, the available series show life expectancy changing by +4.2 years, the urban share by +3.3 percentage points, and forest area by +6.4 million hectares. The indicators moved over the same period, but this alone does not establish that one caused another.

What these numbers mean

Each card names its data year. Historical values are estimates and trends are not personal predictions.

01

World population

About 5.33 billion people lived on Earth in 1990. Population rose because births exceeded deaths for a long period and survival improved. The total alone does not describe age, income distribution or quality of life.

02

Life expectancy

Life expectancy changes with mortality at all ages, health care, living conditions, wars and epidemics. It describes a newborn under that year's mortality conditions; it is not a prediction of one person's lifespan.

03

People online

Growth reflects the spread and affordability of networks and devices. A user count does not measure connection quality, regular access or digital skills; years before 1990 use the nearest available value.

04

Urban population

The urban share changes through migration, natural growth and the reclassification of settlements. Countries define urban areas differently, so it is not a direct ranking of development or wellbeing.

05

Forest area

Forest area includes natural and planted forests. Deforestation, fire, regrowth and revised inventories all affect the series. A larger area does not prove recovery of biodiversity, maturity or forest quality.

06

Air passenger journeys

Passenger journeys grew with incomes, tourism and access to air travel; the pandemic explains the sharp 2020 fall. A passenger is counted on every flight segment, so this is not a count of unique people.

Country boundaries and rounding

Series follow the countries and areas used by each source. Historical values for Russia, Germany, Bangladesh and other countries do not reconstruct every year's political borders. Values are rounded only for display; change is calculated before rounding.
