Garden bed planting grid calculator
How many planting positions fit my chosen rectangular grid?
Count plant centres using your bed dimensions, spacing, edge margins and row direction.
Your layout in centimetres
How the estimate works
On each axis, subtract both edge margins. If the remainder is negative, the count is zero; otherwise divide by the relevant spacing, round down and add one. The first centre is at the starting margin. Further centres follow the chosen spacing and cannot cross the opposite margin. Extra space stays at the far end; the grid is not automatically centred.
D < 2m → n = 0
D ≥ 2m → n = ⌊(D − 2m) ÷ s⌋ + 1
N = rows × perRowCounts point centres, not the size or health of living plants. Choose spacing suitable for your own plants and check their seed or plant guidance. No paths, irregular beds, staggered rows, mixed crops, yield or optimum packing are modeled. Margins belong to the physical length and width axes even when rows rotate. If the margins meet exactly, one centre can lie on that axis.
University of Maine Extension: choosing plant spacing (different gardening method) ↗Check the filled example
Chosen example: 300 × 120 cm, 30 cm within rows, 40 cm between rows, 15 cm margins on both axes. Along the length: 10 positions × 3 rows = 30. Along the width: 4 × 7 = 28. These are illustrative dimensions, not crop-spacing recommendations.
Accepted input values
Inputs are accepted as finite numbers; the accepted values are shown below. Integer counts are calculated from their decimal representations and displayed in full, including very large counts. This does not remove input precision limits.
